Niagara Families & MP Dean Allison Raise Awareness for Anaphylaxis |
|
posted on 07 Jun 2010 |
Niagara West - Glanbrook Member of Parliament Dean Allison gave notice for a motion in the House of Commons today: That in the opinion of the House, anaphylaxis is a serious concern for an increasing number of Canadians and the government should take the appropriate measures necessary to ensure these Canadians are able to maintain a high quality of life.
Anaphylaxis is a medical condition describing people with severe, life threatening allergies. Reactions are rapid in onset and may cause death without immediate treatment.
Food is the most common cause of anaphylaxis, but insect stings, medicine, latex or exercise can cause reactions. In Canada, the most common food allergens are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, shellfish, fish, sesame and wheat. Anaphylaxis has no cure, though important research and efforts to find a cure are underway. Avoidance is the required preventative measure. (Cont'd...) |

Dean Rises to Congratulate Red Cross Workers |

posted on 06 May 2010 |
Mr. Speaker, I rise today in support of World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day to pay tribute to Red Cross staff and volunteers across this country like Douglas Mole from Fonthill, Ontario in my riding of Niagara West-Glanbrook.
After serving for 28 years in the Canadian military, Mr. Mole joined the Red Cross movement in 2001 when he responded to the tragedy of September 11th in New York. Since then he has used his skills as a logistics delegate to help people around the world whether it be in conflict zones, responding to natural disasters, or distributing bed nets to fight Malaria.
When he’s home in Canada, Mr. Mole serves as a Red Cross emergency response volunteer in the Niagara region. His partner, Christiane Muir, is also a fellow Red Cross delegate.(Cont'd...) |

Continued Opposition to Liberal OAS Bill |
|
posted on 25 Mar 2010 |
Recently, my office has again started to receive a good deal of constituent correspondence from individuals very concerned about Bill C-428. Bill C-428 is a Private Member’s Bill introduced on June 18th, 2009 by Liberal MP Ruby Dhalla. This Bill seeks to amend the Old Age Security (OAS) Act to reduce from ten years to three years the residency requirement for entitlement to a monthly pension.
As I have stated in my replies to the many constituents who have been contacting my office about this issue, I am opposed to this Bill as I feel the status quo is generous enough for new Canadians.
Canada does make OAS agreements with nations that have comparable social security programs, which allow some newcomers to Canada to qualify for OAS sooner. It should also be noted that in these cases it works both ways and a Canadian could also qualify for a pension in a foreign country that had a reciprocal agreement.(Cont'd...) |

Conservatives Move to Scrap Wasteful & Ineffective Long-Gun Registry |
|
posted on 05 Nov 2009 |
Last night, law-abiding Canadian long-gun owners came a significant step closer to being freed from the failed, Liberal long-gun registry.
In a 164-137 vote, Members of Parliament voted in favour of Conservative MP Candice Hoeppner’s bill to end the wasteful long-gun registry. This $2 billion boondoggle offers no protection from the vast majority of gun crime and unfairly targets honest hunters and farmers.
As Conservative MPs voted last night to end the long-gun registry, they were joined by twelve NDP MPs, eight Liberal MPs and one independent MP from Quebec. These opposition Members put partisan politics aside, listened to their constituents and did the right thing.(Cont'd...) |

Madam Speaker, as the temperature cools, the days shorten and the opposition parties threaten to force an election, it can only mean one thing: Fall is approaching.
For many rural communities across the country this means gearing up to host a fall fair. These fairs offer smaller communities the opportunity to showcase the very best that the citizens have to offer as well as paying tribute to the rich agriculture heritage that these towns share.
Hundreds of tireless volunteers are to be commended for their efforts in making these events as popular and successful as they are.(Cont'd...) |

Government of Canada Re-Introduces Legislation to End Early Parole for Murderers |
|
posted on 10 Jun 2009 |
Niagara West-Glanbrook M.P. Dean Allison and St. Catharines M.P Rick Dykstra welcomed the news that the Honourable Rob Nicholson, P.C., Q.C., M.P. for Niagara Falls, Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada, introduced legislation that would amend the Criminal Code to repeal the “faint hope” clause.
This would mean that criminals who commit first- or second-degree murder will no longer be able to apply for early parole.
Allison tabled similar legislation during a previous session of Parliament to remove the “faint hope” clause for first and second degree murderers, which was seconded by Dykstra.
“I will continue to advocate on behalf of victims of crime,” said Allison. “And I am proud that our government will not simply provide lip service on the issue of getting tough on violent offenders.”(Cont'd...)

Mr. Speaker, I would like to draw to the attention of the House the recent triumph of one of my constituency’s famed wineries – Le Clos Jordanne.
In a recent competition held in Montreal by Cellier Magazine, Californian wines competed against those from France to see if New World wines could outdo France’s famous Bordeaux and Burgundy regions.

A Productive Session of Parliament |

Canadians work hard, pay their taxes and play by the rules. They don’t expect government to do it all, but they do want to know that Ottawa is on their side.
In this past session of Parliament, I feel that our government has worked hard on behalf of taxpayers and achieved real results for Canadians everywhere.
This year, our economic plan has delivered billions of dollars in retroactive tax relief through tax refunds to individuals and families.
Today, a typical working family is better off by almost $3,500 per year compared to when our government first took office because of our family-friendly tax and benefit measures, including cuts to the GST and a new $1,200 child care benefit.(Cont'd...) |

Mr. Speaker, as my colleague previously indicated, the Government of Canada remains deeply concerned about the human rights and the humanitarian situation in Sudan and has responded to those human rights violations both in word and in deed.
The government is supportive of the motion under debate. We believe that the time has come to place further pressure upon the government of Sudan, including economic pressure, to meet international standards of conduct.
We should remind the House that, since 1992, Canada has withheld trade and commercial support and trade development programs to Canadian businesses wishing to do business or invest in Sudan.(Cont'd...) |

Dean Speaks on Budget 2008 |

posted on 28 Feb 2008 |
Mr. Speaker, it is my pleasure to rise in the House today and speak to budget 2008 as introduced by the Minister of Finance on Tuesday. This is the government's third balanced budget in a row. It is balanced, focused and prudent. I can say that not only am I excited by it but I am encouraged by the direction this government is taking.
It is a pleasure for me to speak on this budget because it not only will assist the residents in my riding of Niagara West—Glanbrook but it will indeed benefit all Canadians.
Responsible leadership is an appropriate title for this budget. It is a document that reflects the strong and responsible leadership that this Prime Minister, this Minister of Finance, and indeed this Conservative government continue to demonstrate with the public finances of Canada.
Canadians are guided by the values of compassion, kindness and generosity. In keeping with that mandate, our government is providing significant support for our individuals, families, workers and our seniors.
To date our government has taken actions that will provide nearly $200 billion in tax relief over this and the next five years, $140 billion of which will be for individuals, families and seniors.(Cont'd...) |

Dean Allison's Private Member's Motion on protecting property rights was voted down by opposition party members in the House of Commons on December 4th. Nevertheless, the Niagara West-Glanbrook MP vows to continue the fight to entrench property rights in Canada's Constitution.
"Protecting property rights is an initiative that is very important to Niagara West-Glanbrook residents and Canadians from coast to coast," said Allison. "Despite opposition party tactics, I will continue to raise awareness and move forward on this issue."
Currently there is no constitutional provision protecting property rights in Canada. Section 7 of the Charter reads: Everyone has the right to life, liberty and security of the person and the right not to be deprived thereof except in accordance with the principles of fundamental justice.(Cont'd...) |

Mr. Speaker, I am grateful to speak today to Bill C-284. I look forward to the opportunity to speak about out government's record, especially when it comes to education and students. Before I do that though, I would certainly offer my congratulations to the member for Halifax West. I know that this has been an issue that has been very important for him. It is something that he has certainly been interested in over the years.
I also appreciate what the member for Dartmouth—Cole Harbour had to say in terms of how our committee works. Certainly it is not without any issues. All committees struggle a little bit with a minority government and how we can move things forward.(Cont'd...) |

Canada’s New Government: Protecting Taxpayers and Preserving Priorities |

posted on 26 Sep 2006 |
For many years, Canadians have heard horror stories about how their hard-earned tax dollars were being spent. Perhaps nowhere was this more evident than with the Sponsorship Scandal, where Liberal-friendly advertising firms received contracts and commissions for doing little or no work.
From the testimony heard at the Gomery Commission, it was clear that the previous Liberal government was more concerned with protecting its entitlements, rather than ensuring taxpayers’ dollars were spent wisely.
However, good news is here. Times have changed in Ottawa. Canada’s new government has delivered on its commitments in several areas, getting things done for all of us, and not just the Liberal elite.(Cont'd...) |

Mr. Speaker,
Today I rise in the house to recognize the work and entrepreurial spirit of Richard Koroscil, President and CEO of the Hamilton International Airport located in Mount Hope in my riding of Niagara West-Glanbrook.
Hamilton International is at the centre of Ontario’s population growth, by offering direct non-stop and connecting flights to destinations across Canada and around the world.
Our airport has always been strategically located for easy accessibility for Ontario residents as well as commercial carriers going to markets in Canada and the United States.
Hamilton International is in a geographically and commercially enviable position to promote tourism and trade in Toronto-Hamilton-Niagara corridor as well as other areas of Southern Ontario.
Recently, Globespan, an international airline, recognized this exceptional strategic location by selecting Hamilton Airport as one of its premier destinations.
In choosing Hamilton International, Globespan partnered not just with the airport but with the whole community.
I wish to applaud the efforts of Mr. Koroscil and his team for making this airport a first-class transportation hub for the residents of Hamilton and Niagara West-Glanbrook.
Thank you, Mr. Speaker. |

Dean addresses the House of Commons on Budget 2006 |
|
posted on 08 May 2006 |
Today Dean addressed the House of Commons regarding the recently announced Conservative budget. Below you will find the text of his speech.
Thank you Mr. Speaker.
This budget is not about “beer and popcorn,” parents raising future criminals, destroying the environment, or tearing up agreements as the Liberals would have Canadians believe.
This budget is about putting Canadians first. It is about giving everyone the opportunity to keep more of their hard earned dollars in their pockets, not in liberal pockets. And it is about accountability. Real accountability.
Last Tuesday, our government tabled its first budget which has thrown open the doors on a new era in Canadian finance.
This budget is a powerful example of a Conservative promise kept.
During the election we promised to bring tax relief to hardworking Canadians. And with this budget, we have kept this promise with a $20 Billion tax cut that will benefit ALL Canadians. (Cont'd...) |
