Setting the Record Straight on the Canada Pension Plan |

As many of you who rely on the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) have noticed, there is a difference in the amount of the payment increase that will be received for 2010.
Annual CPP increases are linked to the Consumer Price Index (CPI). Each January the previous year's index is calculated and CPP payments are adjusted to reflect the difference. Sometimes, it's a larger increase, and in some years it's a smaller increase depending on how the CPI did the previous year.
Statistics Canada developed the CPI to measure changes in the cost of living. The CPI tracks changes in the cost of common household expenses such as the costs of food, shelter, clothing, transportation, health care and other average household expenditures.(Cont'd...) |

Canadians Providing Aid to Haiti |

On Monday, during the Ministerial Preparatory Conference on Haiti in Montreal, Prime Minister Stephen Harper rallied the international community to a strategic and coordinated effort to help rebuild Haiti.
Last week, our Government was proud to announce Canada will provide an additional $80 million for humanitarian aid and assistance in Haiti. This brings our total response to a potential $135 million.
Furthermore, Prime Minister Stephen Harper and Laureen Harper recently visited the Canadian Red Cross office in Ottawa to make a personal donation towards the relief efforts in Haiti. Our Government is reminding Canadians that cash donations are the fastest, most efficient way to get help to people living in a disaster zone.(Cont'd... |

Free Public Skating a Big Hit! |

More than 200 skaters joined local MP, Dean Allison at the Peach King Arena on Sunday to enjoy his annual free family skating event.
Each year, instead of a New Year levee, Mr. Allison holds free family skating sessions at local arenas within his constituency and invites residents to come out and enjoy some fun time together.
Donations to the local food bank are collected in return for free admission to the arena. Almost 50 pounds of food was collected at the Peach King Arena on Sunday along with cash donations to benefit those less fortunate.(Cont'd...) |

New EI Benefits for Self-Employed Persons |

Beginning in January 2011, self-employed Canadians will be able to access Employment Insurance (EI) special benefits. There are four types of EI special benefits: maternity benefits; parental benefits; sickness benefits; and compassionate care benefits.
As a self-employed person, you will be able to enter into an agreement with the Commission through Service Canada starting on January 31, 2010.
To enter into an agreement with the Commission, you will have to register online using a My Service Canada Account anywhere you can access the Internet, including at a Service Canada Centre near you. |
